EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: NO TO THE INCINERATOR disguised as RECOVERY (RECOVERY)

European Parliament votes against incineration

WASTE 22/02/2007
whose full European Parliament has spoken today (22/02/2007) for the reduction and recycling, in fact admitting that they are the key points of a sustainable waste management in Europe. Furthermore, MEPs have refused to consider the incineration of waste and recovery, a decision that would have encouraged the illegal transport and waste.

Members had to vote on proposed amendments to the Waste Framework Directive, the legislation, "mother" to be derived from numerous directives "daughters" and that set the guidelines of the laws applicable in all Member States European Union. Your vote has endorsed a relatively ambitious recycling targets (50% for municipal waste and 70% for industrial and construction and demolition in 2020), promoting more efficient use of resources and less impact on climate change, as approved amendments to the draft directive supporting prevention, reuse and recycling.

Another good news is the vote that the European Union drawn up by June 2008 a special directive on biodegradable waste, as foreseen in the 6th Environmental Action Plan, an initiative that brings forgotten years.

But without
doubt the news star is the rejection of the proposal to consider incineration as recovery , something which would have a serious problem for new countries still lack access to waste management infrastructure and expertise on this topic. Not to mention that this new classification would favor the export of waste to be "recovered" in countries with lower costs, something that today is forbidden to be considered incineration as a disposal.

As for the reduction, the Parliament has voted for the stabilization of waste generation all states by 2012, the first step to begin to reduce them.
